 Podcast and interview:

  1. How do your products use or challenge conventions, and how do they represent social groups or issues?

My film primarily sticks to traditional crime conventions, particularly in its plot structure. However, by featuring teenagers as the main characters, it represents certain aspects of teenage social dynamics and feeds into the common fears parents have when their kids go out and what could potentially happen. While it doesn’t tackle major societal issues, it does reflect the ways in which teens interact and navigate their environments. That said, my project has the potential to challenge conventions related to social groups—especially in how teenage victims are portrayed in crime narratives. The podcast serves as an opportunity to expand on these ideas, discussing common stereotypes surrounding teenage kidnappings and how the media often portrays them. In this podcast we can analyze these tropes and explore whether they truly show the reality or feed into misconceptions about youth safety and vulnerability.

2. How do your products engage with the audience, and how would they be distributed as real media products?

My film engages the audience primarily through entertainment, immersing them in the suspenseful atmosphere of the story. By using a third-person point of view, viewers feel like they are in the film with the characters. The strategic use of camera angles enhances this engagement, giving the viewer foreshadowing and building tension, making the experience more suspenseful and interactive. If this were a real media product, it could be distributed on platforms such as YouTube, where audiences can frequently consume independent content. Additionally, submitting it to film festivals would be a great way to gain exposure, as these events often showcase small, independent productions like ours. These platforms would also be a cheap way to promote our product.

3. How did your production skills develop throughout this project?

Throughout this project, my production skills have grown significantly. I have improved my editing techniques, learned to apply cinematography principles effectively, and developed a better ability to identify techniques to match certain genres. Over the course of the year, I’ve gained experience in editing various clips and incorporating effects to enhance the film’s impact. Additionally, I’ve learned how to utilize different shot angles to create a compelling mise-en-scène, bringing depth and meaning to each scene. This project has helped me develop my technical and creative skills, making me a more confident and capable filmmaker.

4. How did you integrate technologies in this project?

In this project, we used various technologies to create and enhance both the filming and editing process. We relied on a handheld camcorder as our main and only camera. This gave a clear, quality video but also gave a subtle, grainy effect in the dark. This added to the suspense and mystery aspect of our film. For post-production, we used editing software to piece together clips, add audio, refine the narrative, and enhance the overall appeal for the audience. These technological tools played a crucial role in bringing our vision and adding some conventions to highlight our genre to our film and creating a more polished and immersive final product.
