"She's All That" Representation Discussion
Some potential issues with gender representation in this trailer are the typical "jock," "popular girl," and "nerd." The jock is portrayed as overly masculine, and the popular girl is overly sexualized and rude, while the nerdy girl is perceived as ugly until she takes off her glasses. I do not think there is proper representation of these groups in this film, as they feed into stereotypes of teens in high school and how they act towards each other. Based off what is shown, the storyline seems to sort of go along with these stereotypes, but the main guy character tries to get with the "nerdy" girl as a dare/bet, which is very typical in these types of movies. The difference is it seems as if one of the "jocks" sees the "nerdy" girl as beautiful and misunderstood, which does kind of go against the typical storyline. But no, it doesn't really address the problems. While it may be better for films to have quality representation, especially targeted for younger audiences so they can learn what quality representation is, it doesn't have to be a responsibility for films. Films don't have a responsibility for anything; they have creative freedom. Do I think films should feed into bad representations and/or stereotypes? No. Aside from the gender representations in this trailer, the movie seems interesting. I really like the songs that were played in the film, like 'Kiss Me.' I am starting to get more into romcoms, so this might be put on my watch list.
