Media Reflection

How your relationship with media has started to change during the beginning of this course:

My relationship with media has changed throughout this course by learning how to identify different types of media and what qualities, such as conventions, to categorize them by. I'm not a huge movie or film person, but this course has piqued my interest in movies, films, and documentaries. This course has also given me a much deeper understanding as to what defines the genres of a movie and what differentiating factors exist between a movie, a documentary, or a documentary or film. That is, in a movie/film sense, this course has also allowed me to identify stereotypes in everyday media we consume that most people overlook. Especially as a woman, the female stereotypes we see online are so often thrown in our face we consider it normal, which is not okay whatsoever.

Your relationship with and consumption of media:

As somebody who has lived with technology their whole life, I have never known what it's like to not consume media. Sure, when I was in elementary through middle school, I didn't have social media like Instagram or Snapchat, but I always had access to YouTube and the news, so I had an idea as to what was trending in the world and major events happening. As I have gotten older, I've begun to absorb media more and more in comparison to younger me due to me being allowed to access various platforms. I would say my relationship and consumption with media have been pretty positive, I’m glad I was restricted from apps such as Snapchat or Instagram, so I didn’t post things that would come back to haunt me later. Media has also taught me a variety of things I probably gone my whole life without knowing or it would’ve taken me a long time to find out about. Such as learning there are certain colors that compliment your skin tone and how everyone has a certain undertone color. Like some people have more of a yellow undertone while others will have more of a red. Media has definitely changed my views on the world in more positive than negative ways. So, I would say I have a mutualistic relationship with media.

Any potential struggles with the analysis and early stages of the course:

In the early stages of this course, there was a lot of confusion about the difference between a film and a movie and when and where would the use of the words would be appropriate. I also thought this course would be very boring due to the fact I am not a huge movie fan in general. I am also mainly worried about the creating your own movie portion of this class since I have almost no knowledge on film and movies, let alone making one. But after these few weeks, I have more confidence that this class will teach me all I need to know, and I won't need prior experience or knowledge with film or editing.
