Media Reflection #3

Image
One of the last movies I watched was Smile 2 and Here. Smile 2 was a horror/mystery film, and the movie Here was a fantasy/drama film. I cried watching both, one from sadness and the other out of fear. The movie was distributed by  Paramount Pictures and  Temple Hill Entertainment, and Bad Feeling was the production company of Smile 2. Here it is distributed by TriStar Pictures and created by Miramax, Imagemovers, and Playtone. Yes, I tend to interact with media created by larger companies mainly when I watch movies. On social media platforms I consume more smaller creator content and not just large companies. I wouldn't say I look for independent content; I think, more so, it finds me. In comparison to Smile 2, the companies used to create the movie "Here" seem to be not as well known, coming from my knowledge. I don't really consume movies that often, but when I do, I usually go to the movie theater, which more often than not plays movies made by larger companies. I...

Music video mini project

Image
Music video: Story Board: Personal Contribution: In this project I helped design the storyboard, took part in acting, and helped with the editing of the video. I also chose the song used in this project.  Reflection: My knowledge of cinematography informed my artistic choices in my video by incorporating prior knowledge from growing up watching music videos and movies that have a similar theme to the song. Since the song "Kiss Me" is from a love story movie (She's All That), I decided we should try to go for something similar. The music video was trying to portray two people who are in love but too nervous to kiss, but finally at the end they have the confidence to kiss. I tried to get a similar vibe to the music video "Love Story" by Taylor Swift or like an old 90s love story movie.

Media Reflection #2

Media Reflection Prior to being in this course, I had never really needed to set up or make a scene or use any professional camera skills. I would say I am pretty decent at taking pictures for my friends, but professionally, no. I have done some editing on photos not of people or anything, more like editing for school Instagram pages. My skills have changed a little bit throughout this course. I know more about how angle and lighting affect the overall look and feel of the photo, otherwise known as mise en scène. Obviously my skills will need to develop further to pass this exam or help create my opening sequence for next semester. I need to develop my skills further in identifying  the empty spaces in images I take and the placement, lighting, and angle to make sure it conveys the prompt I may be using. I think my skills have developed pretty well for the short amount of time I have been in this course. Now, filmmaking-wise, I have nothing. I have little to no experience with film...

Photography Project

Photo prompt: offense on school grounds    1. In a few sentences, describe what you will photograph to respond to your photo prompt. (Note: Your photograph should have a human subject.) Also briefly discuss the overall look/feel/mood you are attempting.  The person will be standing outside the principal's office (the door that says the principal's name and title) with a look of horror and a referral paper in hand.     2.  Create a hand-drawn version of your intended photograph. This must be shown to Reynolds by either Monday or Tuesday next week (9/30 or 10/1). Your photo should not be taken before your rough sketch is made.      3. Media Reflection

How your relationship with media has started to change during the beginning of this course:     My relationship with media has changed throughout this course by learning how to identify different types of media and what qualities, such as conventions, to categorize them by. I 'm not a huge movie or film person , but this course has piqued my interest in movies, films, and documentaries. This course has also given me a much deeper understanding as to what defines the genres of a movie and what differentiating factors exist between a movie, a documentary, or a documentary or film. That is , in a movie/film sense, this course has also allowed me to identify stereotypes in everyday media we consume that most people overlook. Especially as a wom an, the female stereotypes we see online are so often thrown in our face w e consider it normal , which is not okay whatsoever.     Your relationship with and consumption of media:     As somebody who has...

Genre Conventions

Genre conventions are the common elements that help define a genre, such as themes, characters, or plots. Genre conventions are used heavily when making a film to help with choosing which audience type to target (like a younger or mature audience), who to cast in the film (if someone is making an action film, they would want a common star like the Rock), what will make the studio money, and which movie genre to finance. However, some filmmakers will use genre in an alternative way to their advantage (pizza analogy). The genre that interested me the most had to have been fantasy. I find it really intriguing as to how filmmakers are able to portray mythological or folklore stories in a film. I also really like the story formula of a quest and goal and the potential and wide variety of settings, characters, and costumes and designs that can be used in this genre of film. The creativity in this genre is endless, and growing up with the movies I would watch, fantasy would have to be m...

"She's All That" Representation Discussion

Some potential issues with gender representation in this trailer are the typical "jock," "popular girl," and "nerd." The jock is portrayed as overly masculine, and the popular girl is overly sexualized and rude, while the nerdy girl is perceived as ugly until she takes off her glasses. I do not think there is proper representation of these groups in this film, as they feed into stereotypes of teens in high school and how they act towards each other. Based off what is shown, the storyline seems to sort of go along with these stereotypes, but the main guy character tries to get with the "nerdy" girl as a dare/bet, which is very typical in these types of movies. The difference is it seems as if one of the "jocks" sees the "nerdy" girl as beautiful and misunderstood, which does kind of go against the typical storyline. But no, it doesn't really address the problems. While it may be better for films to have quality repre...
